Van Conversion For Solo Surfer Vanlife (Timelapse)

This tiny van needed to house 2 surfboards, all the facilities to be a self contained camper van, and enough storage and space for a solo traveller to live comfortably. This was already done up as a self contained camper van but needed a lot of work and the layout didn't suit its new owner. So everything had to be redone basically. This is my first van conversion. I see the figure 8 fastener mistake all the time. Obviously way too late, but you can’t put those on the sides. It will lock it in place and do the exact opposite of what you’re looking for. Just a heads up.

    I am very very very new to woodworking, but i've loved CAD/3DS max and making things with those just because i personally enjoy doing it, and i've been second guessing that decent products could be made from plywood, but this really changed my mind about that completely. Its super cool to see whats possible with limited tools and limited space!

    I did a similar table using reclaimed mahogany and learned a couple things the hard way. One, you have to orient each tabletop board so you can plane the surface (1:38) in one direction. If not, the plane will gouge the surface... fill with epoxy later, but it's unsightly. The growth rings on your top boards (some up, some down) suggest they may cup later. That's a small fortune in tools. Facing the boards on a table saw is more properly done on a jointer. You should emphasize that any epoxy has to be absolutely well mixed. The blowtorch on the epoxy is to pop the bubbles that will rise up to the surface, but it's unnecessary if you're going to sand it later. Blind tenons on the legs would have left the completed table a little more attractive. Everyone's a critic... you did a nice job.

    I built one similar to this - never really cared about how it looked so mine is a lot more quick & dirty - but it's the same slanted, horizontal board design. It's great, but if you want to attach your pedals with zipties you should install vertical straps of some kind, otherwise zipties don't really work unless you drill holes or something. That's the one improvement that I would suggest to this design (and that I will add next time I make one).

    This is a great design. I'm impressed with it. Not super impressed that you don't own an angle grinder and you had to cut the bin with a hacksaw. But good job for getin' er' done!

    Egad. Some of the most dangerous cutting techniques I have ever seen. Using a sled with the wood up against the rip fence? Hand over the blade? Fellow hobbyists, please no not copy a lot of the techniques shown here.

    I used an old Karcher Vac on top of a 240 Litre "Sulo" bin........ and it still sucks the sides in!!!! Gonna have to re-design the in-take as the sawdust is still coming to the top and covering the filter over the suction area. Would appreciate any ideas on how to prevent or reduce this from happening???

    • @TheOffcut
      @TheOffcut 5 місяців тому

      My bin also gets sucked in when the hose is blocked. One way to prevent it would be to cut a plywood ring that sits tight against the sides of the bin to reinforce it and stop it from collapsing. For the intake in the center, I have it offset to the intake of the bin by about 270 degrees to create a vortex so the dust spins around the sides and not get sucked into the center intake easily. Hope this helps!
